Echizen Lacquerware Bowl – Naouemon Chōjū-giga – Inner Vermilion
A Modern Design Inspired by the Legendary Chōjū-giga Scrolls
Echizen lacquerware began when skilled urushikaki (lacquer tappers) — artisans who harvested lacquer — applied the material to their own tableware. From the start, these pieces were created with careful thought on how to use lacquer to make vessels both beautiful and durable.
This bowl features the kijiro-nuri technique, in which multiple layers of high-quality transparent lacquer are applied to allow the natural wood grain and patterns to show through. Over time, the lacquer becomes even more translucent, enhancing the appearance of the wood and any decorative designs.
With its modern depiction of Chōjū-giga — Japan’s famous “Frolicking Animals” scrolls — this soup bowl adds a touch of comfort and elegance to your everyday dining.
